Duterte Says He’ll Talk To Indian Ambassador Over ‘5-6’

Davao City Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday called out the Indian ambassador for the longtime practice of some Indian migrants who offer five-six loans, or those that lend cash at a hefty 20-percent interest. In a speech before business executives at a Makati Business Club forum, Duterte sought Indian ambassador Lalduhthlana Ralte to discuss with him the practice. The presidential candidate brought up the issue while narrating the financial problems of common folk such as public shool teachers. His mother Soledad was a teacher. “Silang lahat [teachers], tali iyon sa five-six. Lahat, without exception. Lahat, five-six iyan. Tapos… is the Indian ambassador there? I will just talk to him privately kasi ganito iyan, eh. Magkakaproblema tayo. Yes, this is what happening,” Duterte said drawing laughter from the audience. “I do not mind Indian nationals going around five-six. Okay na sa akin iyan kasi there is no government insitution giving that kind of set up. Immediately, walang file-file, walang approval…. Nandiyan agad ang pera kung kailangan nila,” he added. Duterte said some lenders also sell appliances and other items to the borrower on loans, adding to their burden of payments. “So the poor Filipinos is entirely tied to misery. Okay lang sa akin maghiram. Kung maaari lang, you may want to talk to your compatriots na please lessen the burden of the Filipino because we are a poor country,” Duterte said. “In fact, we will welcome any help you will extend to us, to lighten the load of the Filipino,” he said.
